RIF Pittsburgh's mission is to empower children with the books, resources, motivation and opportunities to develop a lifelong love of reading. We specifically work to mitigate the literacy and achievement gaps that disproportionately impact Black youth and children from low-income backgrounds even before they start kindergarten. Our wide network of literacy support includes: our Book Babies young family engagement initiative for parents/caregivers and tots; our Storymobile libraries-on-wheels program that offers read-aloud experiences, literacy-building activities, and lending and giveaway books; school-based Everybody Wins! and corporate-based RIF Readers literacy mentoring programs that help early and emerging readers in pre-K through 3rd grade; and our oldest and largest program, Books for Keeps, which hosts Reading Celebrations—including a read-aloud, fun and creative literacy-based activities, and the chance for every child to pick a book to keep!
